In Search of Shadows

“In Search of Shadows”, involves design in several ways. There was measuring, scaling, and idea generation involved in the first steps. Then, we began to form the gallery according to the theme we were given. Design is incorporated everywhere in the gallery because each piece was given thought to communicate an effective and interactive design for the viewer. The goal was to allow the viewer an interactive, life-like experience and the shadows throughout our gallery do just that.

We interpreted the concepts of mass and space to create a cohesive two part design. The mass dominant piece carries a weight unlike the airiness of the space dominant piece. This project allowed us to play with the ideas of weight in design.

Cardboard Chair Project

Our cardboard chair was connected to design through the form, structure, and content of the assignment. To begin the design process, we were given a specific client who we had to interview. After doing so, we were left with measurements and desires that needed to be put into one, final design. Crafting the chair involved careful precision, but when the chair was finished, it was cohesive, functional for the client, and aesthetically pleasing—all of which are aspects of design.

The piece is colorblocked and versatile. It has two distinct looks depending on whether or not the mesh overlay is attached.

This piece uses embroidery and translates text by using stitches. Stitches like the satin stitch, chain stitch and whipped backstitch were used to translate general text as well as authentic signatures of famous directors.
